The term also refers to web-based graphical user interface (GUI) design using images, CSS, and one of the HTML standards. Some people distinguish between "web design" (the graphics and user interface design) and web development, which includes "web design" as well as web server configuration, writing web applications, dealing with security issues, etc. History of website design : The first web designer was Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web and put the first web site online in August 1991. Lee was the first to combine Internet communication (which had been carrying email and the Usenet for decades) with hypertext (which had also been around for decades, but limited to browsing information stored on a single computer, such as interactive CD-ROM design. At first, web design utilized a simple markup language, called HTML, that included some formatting options and the ability to link pages together using hyperlinks. It was this feature that distinguished the Web from other communication media and Web design from other design disciplines. The unique characteristics of the World Wide Web and the unique behaviour it encouraged in users made Web design unlike any previous form of design. As the Web and web design progressed, the markup language used to make it, known as Hypertext Mark-up Language or HTML, became more complex and flexible. Things like tables, which could be used to display tabular information, were soon subverted for use as invisible layout devices. With the advent of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), table based layout is increasingly regarded as outdated. Database integration technologies such as server-side scripting (see CGI, PHP, ASP.NET, ASP, JSP, and ColdFusion) and design standards like CSS further changed and enhanced the way the Web is made. - The introduction of Macromedia Flash into an already interactivity-ready scene has further changed the face of the Web, giving new power to designers and media creators, and offering new interactivity features to users. Flash is much more restrictive than the open HTML format, though, requiring a proprietary plugin to be seen, and it does not integrate with most web browser UI features like the "Back" button. - web design : wikipedia - website desgn : right – wikipedia - monitoring - Competitive scanning - Competition monitoring - Environmental monitoring - environmental assessment - strategic environmental scanning - Suppliers monitoring - Mergers and acquisitions watching - - In patent law, a patent watch is a process for monitoring newly issued patents on a periodic basis to see if any of these patents might be of interest. Patent watches may for instance be performed on a quarterly basis. It is common practice for corporations in patent-based businesses (e.g. manufacturing) to circulate the results of a patent watch to the appropriate technical people to determine if any newly issued patents are of interest. - A newly issued patent may be of interest if it appears to cover one or more products or processes sold by a given company. That company then runs the risk of being sued for patent infringement. In this case, it is prudent for said company to commission a clearance opinion to at least show that they were diligent in making sure that they did not infringe the issued patent. - If the opinion finds that the company is indeed infringing the patent, then the company can: modify its products or processes so that they don’t infringe (designing around), seek a license from the patent holder, or see if they can find evidence that the patent is not valid. A company might do a novelty search to determine if there is any prior art that would invalidate the patent that the patent office had not previously considered. If said prior art is discovered, the company may bring an opposition proceeding, or request a reexamination to have the patent declared invalid. Opposition proceedings are available in Europe and Japan. Reexaminations are available in the U.S. In the US, a company may also bring a lawsuit in Federal Court to have the patent declared invalid. - glass watching - Environmental scanning From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search For a company to gain or maintain a sustainable competitive advantage, it must be ever vigilant, watching for changes in the business environment. It must also be agile enough to alter its strategies and plans when the need arises. - Methods for environmental scanning : There are three ways of scanning the business environment: Ad-hoc scanning - Short term, infrequent examinations usually initiated by a crisis Regular scanning - Studies done on a regular schedule (say, once a year) Continuous scanning - (also called continuous learning) - continuous structured data collection and processing on a broad range of environmental factors Most commentators feel that in today's turbulent business environment the best scanning method available is continuous scanning. This allows the firm to act quickly, take advantage of opportunities before competitors do, and respond to environmental threats before significant damage is done. - The Learning Organization Once information is obtained, it must be disseminated throughout the company, to all departments, and at all levels. There is resistance to this outlook because many employees feel that knowledge is power and sharing knowledge will reduce one's worth to the company. Rather, all people in the company should share in the task of scanning. When all employees scan some part of the environment, and all information, so obtained, gets disseminated through out the organization, the company is said to be a learning organization. - glass environmental scanning
