RACHAEL Woodman "Dreams in glass"
Twenty five years developing colour and form in glass
18 November 2006 - 1 April 2007
Victoria Art Gallery, by Pulteney Bridge, Bath
Rachael Woodman has spent most of her working life in Bath so it seems entirely appropriate that her first retrospective exhibition, celebrating a career spanning twenty five years, should take place in the city.
A skilled technician, Rachael Woodman is known for her highly refined forms and dazzling use of colour as well as an ability to exploit the opaque, translucent and transparent qualities of glass in highly innovative ways. Her ideas have never stood still. Her earliest series of Bevelled Bowls combined layers of colours within a formal vessel, whereas in her more recent Vertical and Chosen series she has "de-constructed" the pieces into separate elements which she then composes into vibrant sculptural works. Her sources of inspiration range from a purely aesthetic delight in using glass as a unique vehicle for colour and form to intensely personal reflections on her Christian faith. These factors have combined to create work of great presence and enduring quality.
Born in 1957, Rachael Woodman gained her first degree at North Staffordshire Polytechnic and after two years abroad at Orrefors Glass School, Sweden and in studios in Denmark and Germany, she completed her MA at the Royal College of Art in London in 1984. Since then, she has established herself as an internationally recognised studio glass artist and as a successful industrial designer, notably with Dartington Crystal. For Dartington she created the 'Rachael Collection' and 'Winemaster' both collections of stemware that are still in production today.
A past winner of the Royal Society of Arts Dartington Glass Prize, the Corning Glass Prize, Form '91 and The Bavarian State Gold Medal, she has exhibited widely in Europe and the USA and has work in many public and private collections including the Corning Glass Museum, New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, whose current guide book features Empty Vessels, a group of vases by Rachael Woodman as the cover illustration.

Montreal, Contes muets (Mute Tales) Glass sculptures by Michèle Lapointe
Maison de la culture Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie

Studio 2
"It was while discovering antique dolls, borrowed from the world of little girls, with their used bodies, dislocated limbs and intense gazes that I felt strong emotions and feelings which are sometimes empty, sometimes ephemeral and sometimes prolonged that I imagined these volatile tales, mute imprints of stories and real facts."
Glass, collage, objects, found images and photos, these are the material that the artist used to create her installations.

The exhibiton Transparent realism contemporary Nordic glass art shows six nordic glass artists working figuratively in glass.
From Anne Karin Jortveits catalogue essay:
'The six artists represented in Transparent realism all operate in a conceptual space in which glass is much more than just an aesthetically pleasing material with functional potential. For all of these young artists, glass is a reflective medium, offering a multitude of opportunities for dialogue with the surrounding world. They have experience of craft, design and art, which allows them to use the material as an overarching platform containing references at both the functional and conceptual levels. They each represent a distinct aspect of contemporary glass art, but they are united by their figurative mode of expression. By alluding to areas such as pop art, ready-mades, physiology, science and through social engagement, they explore different levels of reality.'
The exhibiton is sponsored by Nordic Culture Fund, The Norwegian Association of Arts and Crafts, Essemce and Glasma AB.
