The Ruskin Glass Centre is about to submit an application for a large capital grant to the local Regional Development Agency, Advantage West Midlands. This capital funding would provide with the opportunity to create great new facilities for glassmakers and visitors which would be open to everyone.
Highlights include:
- A new hotshop with viewing gallery
- Cold processing area
- Wet room
- Lampwork/neon room
- Plaster/mould room
- Kiln Room
- 12 new workshops, including incubator units
- Café
- Showcasing and exhibition facilities
- Retail and display areas
- Educational facilities
- A full programme of business support
Artists would be able to rent the hotshop, kiln room, wet room, lampwork and plaster room as and when they need it, accessing specialist equipment for projects or commissions and bridging the gap for glass graduates who don't have the resources to set up their own studio. The International Festival of Glass will benefit from the additional resources to stage exhibitions and demonstrations. The Ruskin Glass Centre aims to support glass makers by promoting, supporting and attracting new audiences wherever possible.

Ana Thiel's new sculpture
by Barbara Levine
The new sculptures in Ana Thiel's exhibition, "Mutabilis" (Latin for change and mutation) opening at YAM gallery on January 12, immediately captivate your attention. Thiel's work for this exhibition mixes ideas about books and text with materials found in nature including elements that are both fluid and solid such as water and glass, to address issues of time, the body and our relationship to the natural world.

Glass art by Vesa Varrela at Design Forum
Vesa Varrela is especially known for his one-off glass objects and his large works and installations in glass that are often an integral part of the architecture of public spaces. In his sculptures in particular Vesa Varrela combines many other materials with glass, such as wood, stone, metal and even asphalt. Vesa Varrela's art in glass is marked by a graphic approach, ornamentality and three-dimensionality created with the aid of sandblasting.
His recent works include sculptural and colourful one-off pieces of complex technique made in glasshouses with master glassblowers. Working together with master glassblower Jaakko Liikanen, he has made works assembled from ring-shaped cylinders, which are also on show at Design Forum. These works reflect the spirit of Kaj Franck while also renewing it.
Several large one-off blown pieces realized in different techniques will be featured in the exhibition. They will include new multicoloured works made in the Czech Republic, incalmo and filigree glass, and glass sculpture.
The exhibition also presents other, less-known aspects of Vesa Varrela's oeuvre.
He has prepared the stage and visual design of a work of dance based on Samuel Beckett's play Rockaby for the MobitaDanscon dance theatre.
Vesa Varrela was awarded a five-year state artist grant at the beginning of 2007.
