Ray King installs light responsive sculpture in new weill greenberg center at Cornell University in NYC
On January 26, 2007, 'Light Wings,' Ray King's dynamic suspended glass sculpture was unveiled in the lobby of the
Weill Greenberg Center, a new clinical research facility located at 70th and York in New York's Cornell University medical complex.
The sculpture, made from 10 000 dichroic glass elements, hovers 19' high in the lobby's atrium plaza and spans 35' wide, sweeping over the center's main escalators. The work interacts with light to trigger brilliant chromatic projections and reflections into the surrounding space.
The glass elements are laminated with four different dichroic coatings 'cyan, yellow, blue and magenta' which reflect one color and project its opposite. The glass elements are strung on stainless steel cables at precise intervals to create a three-dimensional pattern echoing the form and movement of the escalators.
