Announcing a Special International Exhibit in Nancy : "Glass Art in Finland"
See all the photos of the exhibit at idverre.net
Finnish glass is world renowned for its quality of design and state of the art technology.
For the very first time in France, audiences will be able to view a collection of 150 pieces created by Finnish glass artists. They will be on display from March 10 to April 7, 2006 at the Departmental Council of Meurthe et Moselle.
The bridges and artistic links between this French Department and Finland are not lacking : the city of Helsinki being a part of the network of Art Nouveau cities along with Barcelona, Glasgow, Budapest and Nancy.
This is why the Pole Verrier, the Finnish Consulate of Nancy and the National Museum of Finnish Glass in Riihimaki have been working for the past several months to bring together the Lorraine region and the Hame region, the cradle of Finnish glass.
Thanks to this international exhibition, visitors will be able to experience the diversity and quality of Finnish glass through 150 original works by 50 artists still largely unknown in France, but many of whom are already enjoying international acclaim.
All the major glass techniques will be represented : glassblowing, fusing, slumping, painting, and even pate de verre to which one might think the Lorraine possessed exclusive rights...!

Ulrica Hydman-Vallien
The traveling exhibition opening now at the Finnish Glass Museum in Riihimäki shows art of Ulrica Hydman-Vallien, one of the best known Swedish glass artists. She has reached a wide public through her highly original art glass. But it was as a ceramist that she originally established her reputation as an artist with an entirely personal range of expression. Since 1972 she has produced glass for Åfors / Kosta Boda, producing not only a succession of unique works of art but also developing new techniques for crafting glass on larger scale. And Ulrica has succeeded in introducing an element of myth into her glass, thus making it classical in spirit, if not form.
Form March 17 to May 21, 2006
Vitrum : Glass between Art and Science in the Roman World
Archaeological findings and literary sources of the I century A.D. document a considerable production and use of glass objects in Vesuvian cities and numerous other centres of the Roman Empire.
Today in many museums, we can observe the extraordinary quantity and variety of these artefacts, usually exhibited to arouse admiration for their shape, colour and decoration.
The striking, progressive diffusion of glass objects, in reality, derived from a profound technological innovation tied to experimental investigations and, in several cases, to a theoretical discussion on the material's composition and its scientific functionality. The technique of glass-blowing and the attention that ancient philosophers devoted to explaining the ultimate composition of the material, favoured an extraordinary encounter between art and science, between the craftsman's manual dexterity and the philosopher's intellectual achievement.
