Colloque : Le verre matériau fonctionnel du futur
Conferences : Glass, functional material for the future
Nancy, France, November 16th and 17th, 2006

Dear colleagues,

The production of glass goods, whether artistic or decorative, is facing an unprecedented economic crisis. In this society of disposable merchandise at discount prices, what does the future hold for tens of thousands of small and medium sized businesses? And what can be done to help them? We believe that by reporting on economic and technological information via our newsletter, and by raising the technological level of our training programs, these at-risk businesses will be better equipped to meet the challenges of rapidly rising production costs (wages, energy).

This newsletter, together with the idverre website, is available to give voice to your ideas about a situation that, unfortunately, will probably only get worse in the months to come.
Share your insights with us and we will pass them on to our ever growing audience

Pleasant reading

Conferences : Glass, functional material for the future
Based in Lorraine at the heart of the glass and crystal industry, the “Pole Verrier” along with the network of university glass research laboratories, Revelor, in addressing the issue of glass' function, hope to raise the question of the "intelligence of the material" in the automotive and building sectors. Today a glass surface, no longer simply a means of letting in natural light, is endowed with other qualities which are shaping our environment. While some products are already on the market, many others are still in the research stage. This is why we invite you -- researchers, business people, teachers, students -- to share your knowledge, your unique points of view, your experiences, and your questions as well during this glass conference.

First photovoltaic art glass installation (North America, at Regent College, UBC, Vancouver)
Sarah Hall is currently constructing the first stained glass installation in North America to utilize photovoltaic cells. The installation is the central element of a Wind Tower which is being built at Regent College on the campus of UBC in Vancouver. The Wind Tower is designed by architect Clive Grout, who is internationally recognized for his sophisticated and distinctive integrations of buildings and art. The highly visible and publicly accessible 40-foot-high wind tower incorporates 144 square feet of photovoltaic art glass. The Wind Tower and dynamic art glass will be completed in the fall of 2006.

We sorrowfully have to announce the recent death of Peter Dreiser, famous engraver on glass.
Born in Cologne, trained at the glass school of Rheinbach in Germany, Peter Dreiser was the greatest teacher of glass engraving in Great Britain.
He produced some beautiful art works devoted to the natural world, which will live on in public and private collections – the V&A, Corning, the Ulster Museum...
He worked on major pieces presented to foreign dignatories and to Her Majesty The Queen herself.
He wrote a book with J. Matcham and David Mocatta captured Peter Dreiser while engraving on glass for future engravers in a film.
He received the M.B.E. last year and the Honorary Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers.
The Team of the Pole Verrier offers to his family and his friends its condolences.
